Introducing
Geordie 't Hooft

Geordie has nearly 30 years’ taxation and accounting experience.  This has included 15 years as a specialist tax partner with international accounting firms.  He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canterbury (where he is currently studying
part-time for a Bachelor of Arts in History).

He is a Chartered Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

On 1 July 2021, Geordie was appointed to the role of South Island Honorary Consul to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The role includes representing the interests of the Netherlands, especially the fostering of business and cultural connections.  The role reflects Geordie’s Dutch heritage, his Amsterdam-born parents having emigrated to New Zealand a few years before he was born.  Although not fluent, Geordie has a “conversational” level of Dutch language.

Geordie enjoys craft beers, trivia (having hosted several quiz nights), history, and light infrequent exercise.

Tax Consulting

Technical knowledge is meaningless without an ability to translate the jargon into language that business owners and other taxpayers can understand.  Geordie provides advice that is accessible and clear.  He is a regular presenter and commentator on taxation topics, including convening the Tax Special Interest Group for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and university lectures.

Geordie’s tax practice includes advising property developers, high net worth individuals, cross-border transactions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate structuring and restructuring, trusts, charities and succession planning.

Business Advisory

Geordie’s background includes time at the coalface, as CFO of a successful and rapid-growth nationwide franchise company, so he understands what’s needed to ensure that business owners get the relevant and timely information needed for decision making.

General accounting services include preparation of annual financial statements and income tax returns, management accounting, cashflow forecasting and litigation support.

Governance

The combination of three decades of working with businesses, combined with more than 20 years’ board experience, provides a strong foundation to Geordie’s governance skills.  He has a deep understanding of the board’s role in determining purpose, setting an effective culture, and holding management to account, as well as ensuring compliance with the many duties that directors, and their organisations, have.

Geordie’s current roles include chairing the board of Canterbury Education Services Ltd, deputy chair of the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, and board member of Cashmere High School.  Geordie also chairs the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.
